Sebastian leaned against the piano and tested the strings of his violin while his cousin, Billy, sat on the sofa, reading the Daily Alta California and petting Amadeus, who lay sprawled across the cushions beside him. They still had quite a bit to do before they set sail tomorrow, but he knew there’d be no rushing Lucy. Rather than fret, he rosined his bow and examined the sparse parlor with a critical eye. Aside from the piano, only a few pieces of furniture, all scratched and dinged from their trip west, adorned the room. No paintings or artwork of any kind hung from the walls, and only a threadbare rug covered the floor. Certainly a far cry from the fancy drawing rooms to which Melissa would be accustomed. Yet, he supposed her opinion didn’t matter much as long as he could keep her from changing her mind. Besides, if anything chased her off, he doubted it would be their dà ©cor or lack thereof. He loved his family, but they would never be as high class as the doà ±a. He could only hope they didn’t say or do something deemed so uncouth as to make her second guess her decision.
